Deny, Take Up, and Follow
Luke 9:23b
The Upward Look
by Max D. Hutto,
“And He was saying to them all, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” Luke 9:23 NASB
To deny oneself is to put aside one’s own self-centeredness, self-interest, and selfish desires. Instead a disciple is to put Christ first in everything, to be completely and absolutely surrendered to His Lordship. To take up one’s cross daily is to have an obedient lifestyle of sacrifice, serving and glorifying the Lord and helping others to know Christ. To follow Christ is doing what Christ does, continually day by day, step by step, stepping in His footsteps, being like Christ.
Lord Jesus, may my life be totally surrendered to following You. May all my thoughts and actions glorify and honor You, my Savior and my Lord.
