Love/Hate
Luke 14:26

The Upward Look
    by Max D. Hutto,

“If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.” Luke 14:26 NASB

In what is often considered a difficult statement, Jesus uses great hyperbole in describing what it means to be a disciple. One’s love for Christ must be so great that one’s love for all others, even one’s own self, must seem in comparison as hate. Jesus commanded that we are to love one another, yet that love must pale in comparison to one’s devotion and commitment to Him. Jesus does not want prominence but preeminence. He must be first and foremost. He must be one’s Lord! Otherwise one cannot be His disciple.

Lord Jesus, I thank You for my family, whom I dearly love, and for my life. Most of all, I love You and want to honor and glorify You.
