“When therefore you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.” Matthew 6:2 NASB

In Jesus’ day giving money to those in need was considered an act of worship. However, the hypocrites gave, not to worship God, but out of a desire to get noticed by other men. The sound of a trumpet could be the musical instrument played to herald an important announcement, but the sound of the trumpet could also be the sound of clattering coins tossed loudly into the metal funnels of the offering boxes. Either way the desire of the hypocrites was to be recognized by other men for the money they gave to help the poor. They gave simply to be noticed by others.

Lord Jesus, help me as I give to those in need, to give for the right reasons. Help me to give and live in a way that You will receive the glory and honor.
