The Letter Begins
Ephesians 1:1a

The Upward Look
    by Max D. Hutto,

“Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are at Ephesus and who are faithful in Christ Jesus.” Ephesians 1:1 NASB

Typical for that era, the opening of this letter reveals the author and the recipients. There are three things to note about the author. First, the author was Paul, who was in prison for preaching the gospel. Having spent time in Ephesus on his second and third missionary journeys, Paul wrote this treatise to encourage and strengthen the churches. Second, he was an apostle of Christ Jesus. An apostle was someone who was commissioned with a special task by someone in authority, Christ Jesus. Third, Paul was sent according to God’s will.

Lord Jesus, help me to be encouraged and strengthened by Your Word. Guide me so that my thoughts and actions will be according to Your will.
